An off-duty police officer has shot his son in the arm after mistaking him for an intruder. The unidentified cop didn't know his son, aged in his 20's was inside the Texas property and panicked when he saw their garage open and doors unlocked on Saturday. “He thought there might have been an intruder in the house,” Officer Pete Schulte of DeSoto police told NBC DFW. “It was a startling situation. It was an accident,” Schulte said. “Things happened very quickly.” The man was taken to hospital with non life-threatening injuries, the bullet grazing his arm. No arrests have been made.

U.S. President Donald Trump has confirmed the death of Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. It’s understood he detonated a suicide vest, killing himself and three children as American forces raided north-west Syria. Trump watched the operation unfold from the Whitehouse and claims al-Baghdadi died "whimpering and crying".

Cooler conditions are expected to give firefighters the upper hand in NSW as they tackle more than 70 fires burning across the state. The fire danger across the border remains high, with a total fire ban in place for parts of north Queensland with dry and windy conditions expected.

A Perth mother has been charged with the murder of her two young daughters. The six and 10-year-olds were found dead at their home in Madeley, in the northern suburbs on Friday night. The 38-year-old woman is due in court today.

It’s been revealed that backpacker killer Ivan Milat handed a final, sealed note to his family two days before he died. The letter, however, was not a confession, simply his final wishes. Milat was found dead on Sunday morning, following a battle with cancer.
