Police are searching for a man accused of sexually assaulting a woman outside the State Library of Victoria.

The 20-year-old woman was waiting outside the Swanston Street library in the CBD at about 6.30 pm on July 27 when she was approached by an unknown man.

It's understood he struck up a conversation before asking to give her a massage.

He then allegedly sexually assaulted her.

Police say the man then told the woman he needed to catch a train from Melbourne Central Railway Station and left the scene.

Detectives have released images of the man who they believe may be able to assist with their investigation.

He is described as Indian Sub-Continental in appearance, aged in his mid-20s to early 30s with a solid build, brown or black curly hair and dark coloured eyes.

He was wearing a red hooded jumper, dark pants, light-coloured sneakers and a watch at the time.

Anyone who recognises the man or with any information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
