Many of us often hope for an upgrade when we're flying.

But one woman received hers from somewhere completely unexpected: a fellow passenger.

A flight attendant has shared the sweet story of witnessing a man give up his highly sought after seat in business class for a woman he didn't know, purely because she was elderly.

Leah, a Virgin Atlantic flight attendant, shared the experience on her Facebook page along with photos of the two travellers named Jack and Violet.

“Of the hundreds of flights I’ve operated, I’ve had the pleasure of looking after footballers, supermodels and some Hollywood movie stars but let me tell you about my two favourite passengers EVER! Jack and Violet (I wish she was called Vera or Rose),” Leah wrote.

“Jack and his family purchased seats in our upper class cabin for a flight home from New York, but when he got on-board, Jack went and found Violet in economy and swapped seats with her.”

Leah, who now lives in Sydney and is originally from Manchester, explained that Jack didn't know the 88-year-old woman, but felt obliged to give up his seat because she was elderly, reported The Sun.

“He then sat on the row of seats directly next to the economy toilets and never made a peep or asked for anything the rest of the flight,” Leah said.

“No fuss, no attention, literally did it out of the kindness of his own heart, no one asked him to.”

Leah explained it had "always been her dream" for Violet to fly business class and was travelling to New York to visit her daughter, a trip that had been made difficult of late due to a knee replacement.

“You should have seen her face, when I tucked her in her bed after supper,” Leah continued.

She said her daughter won’t believe her, and wanted a ‘selfie’ to prove it, but didn’t have a phone or an email address. These photos are getting sent in the post tomorrow!

Since Leah shared the post, it has gained over 4,000 reactions and more than a thousand shares, with many commenters marveling at the thoughtful gesture.

"This is lovely, so many good people out there," a commenter wrote.

"How lovely of Jack , she looks like she’s enjoyed her flight," added another.

"This is one of the kindest things I have ever read about," a third wrote.
